What is a Smartphone Processor (SoC)?

The SoC, also known as Smartphone Processor is a core component of your smartphone. The SoC is one of the silicon chips in smartphones.

These chips help convert digital signals into analogue ones and vice versa and are responsible for processing calculations and data from various sensors and cameras in your device, converting the digital signal into analogue signals required by the hardware components in the device like cameras and microphones, and even managing data and holding it onto your phone.

A smartphone processor is a piece of hardware integrated into the phone that controls the basic functions of the device such as displaying and handling information.

An SoC typically performs some of the functions needed to process images and video, record sound, and calculate motion.

A smartphone usually comes with a processor. There is a huge variety of processors as there are different kinds of tasks that can be done by a smartphone. The processor or the SoC contains the software which helps with the processing of information in the device.

For example, there could be a processor which handles the graphics processing, a processor which supports 4G networks and also performs some other functions that are required for the normal functioning of the device.

In computers or laptops, we’re using the CPU Central Processing Unit which consists of a chip or Processor, but in mobile phones, we’re using GPU Graphics Processing Unit, which is an octa core-based Processor.

However, processor can come with quad-core or dual-core and also hexa-core, but most mobile processor manufacturing companies make use of the octa-based processor due the power and efficiency it gives.

An Octa-core processor means that it has 8 cores as the name implies, it also says it has 8 chips or CPU’s and the clock speed is set at the requirements of the mobile manufacturing companies by the mobile phone processor manufactureers

The influence of the speed of the mobile device is linked to the clock speed of the 8 cores, the manufacturers may use full powerful cores or may add a few low powered cores.

The Mobile Processors (SoC) is a combination of a CPU and GPU. The SoC is currently being used in smartphones, tablets and wearable devices. As the name suggests, they are used for processing tasks done on the device itself without any need for an external hardware processing power.

Examples include gaming, VoIP, video conferencing applications, etc. The SoC in these devices can be either Exynos 7420 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoCs

This Processor or SoC holds over billions of transistors which are nanometers in size, variety of 14nm, 10nm, 7nm, and 5nm, 3nm are presently under manufacturing by processor companies, and that we may even see 5nm within the coming years.

The 7nm Mobile processors are already seen and used in some flagship smartphones. Mathematically, one nanometre(nm) translates to 10^-9 or a single part during a billion or one-billionth of a metre.

This shows how small the size of transistors are implemented in the processor chips and these SoCs comes with a 64bit CPU.

So lets take look depper, to know the companies that really put in the work and effort into manufacturing these mobile processors used on smartphones.

There are several companies that work into manufacturing mobile processors or SoCs, some also stand to be big-tech smartphone firms (companies or brands)

The RepDex Mark and its Importance

Aside from just checking its real-time performance, we also look in-depth at the specifications. Processors which may show some symptoms of overheating, or lags during extended usage or in gaming, we take out points from the score, and processors which perform high above the normal results would get higher scores.

Including the User experience is very necessary to eliminate the reliance on the crude performance points. These points are given based on research with zero partiality. All marls and sores given are precise with no excess due to favour on any brand or processor.

RepDex Mark Defined

The RepDex Mark is amongst the significantly best and accurate ways to measure the performance of a SOC chipset. As we give an equivalent mark to the real-time world using statistics as its crude score. Take a look at some notable factors that have a huge print on the RepDex Mark.

Technical Constants that Controls RepDex Mark

We have over more than 17 factors and parameters in which we score and measure the performance of a processor, although we are just going to list out the six primary parameters. They are:

  • Real-Time World Performance Statistics
  • Usage Stats: (Long term Phone Usage, Browsing, Gaming, Battery Efficiency, Social Media)
  • Its Features, Specs, and Technologies.
  • Real GPU Performance.
  • The User Experience.
  • Full CPU Performance.

Take Note of this in regard to Processors

• Apple makes its own processors which do run on a unique Operating system. Apple inc doesn’t give out full details of specs. So there isn’t a full view or image on an Apple Processor performance when running on another operating system such as Android.

There is a clear singularity in Kernal, APIs, and also its programming language. The full performance of an Apple chip cannot be compared to Qualcomm chips in sustained performance based on real-time world usage statistics.

And this is one of the good reasons why the RepDex Mark of Apple inc processor chipset is kind of different and there may be a chance of having 0 to 5% error. However, we still, know that most apple processors, in general, are awesome and the A14 Bionic is one of the best mobile processors presently.

As our derivation of RepDex Mark is based on over 17 unique parameters and factors, a SOC with a better GPU with s much weaker CPU may hold the same RepDex Mark as another SOC with a stronger CPU and a weaker GPU.

So you may also review the GPU Benchmarks to know which has a much more powerful graphics processor.

Customized User Interface and Display skins may have a huge influence on the user experience of a smartphone. The User Interface of Samsung, MIUI, and EMUI may have an influence on the experience in comparison to stock android. This factor isn’t really put among our parameters. One can always flash an Installed Custom ROM to boost the experience.

However, points and marls may be altered when we change our ranking algorithm d benchmarking for the RepDex Mark(Score).
